Please contact us if you need help choosing hardware or software; we can't provide loan equipment but we can offer advice!

The 6 week course structure:

Session 1 - Using layers in your work. (cel shading)

Our first week will focus on cel shading, a technique used in the animation, illustration, and comic book industry where outlines, shading and flat colours are drawn on separate layers.
This creates sharp and vibrant images that are easily edited.

Session 2 - Sketching from real life

This session will focus on using your digital drawings as a sketchbook to create quick and versatile observational drawing that you can later adapt for your work.

Session 3 - Painting digitally

This session will look at how to use the different types of brush you have available in your programs. Hard brushes or soft edges? Blending and textured brushes, what do they do?

Session 4 - Using References

This session we'll be looking at how to use one or several reference images in a digital work. Please have with you a few digital photos or sketches in your notebook of things you'd like to draw.

Session 5 - Using textures and patterns

In this session we will look at how you can create texture and pattern in your work by using imported files and applying them to your work..

Session 6 -Transformation tools

Earlier in this course we used selection tools to move or resize a piece of our drawing, but now we will use them  to completely change our drawing! We'll be looking at creating buildings and interiors and how we can turn a flat drawing into a 3D perspective drawing.

Student Materials: Please bring a sketchbook at least A4 in size and note the device recommendations above.
