Shibori Silk Painting - Make a Silk Scarf
One day workshops with Jenny Timms

"...everything I expected and probably more, helpful and encouraging, has inspired me... - Bernard

Silk painting - try your hand at Shibori with these one-day classes for beginners and make your own soft silk scarf

In this workshop you will explore the exciting and varied art of Shibori, creating a beautiful coloured silk scarf by the end of the day.
‘Shibori’ is a Japanese word which describes many different ways of folding, twisting and tying fabric before applying dye; it comes from times long-past in Japan and was once the preserve of royalty alone, the artists creating it held in high-regard.

This is a wonderfully creative, exciting process as the colours blend together and the folds and twists create extraordinary effects.  The highlight of the workshop comes when you unfold your silk to reveal surprising and delightful patterns in glorious technicolour.

To begin we explore 4 different ways of shibori, applying silk paint with a dropper and experimenting with different colour-ways on four silk panels.
You will then choose your preferred folding technique to paint a unique full-size silk scarf, choosing from a selection of beautiful silk paints, and even possibly mixing your own colours too.

We will iron-fix the dyes so you can then take your finished pieces home with you at the end of the day. Silk paint can stain clothing; although we provide aprons please wear scruffy clothes for this class!

The course cost of £65 (£72 in 2018 )includes:

  • Starter materials and 4 pieces of silk for learning the 4 methods of Shibori
  • 1 silk scarf (approx 114cm long ready for painting
  • Use of tools and apron
  • Light lunch & refreshments during the day
  • Maximum class size 6 people
  • All your work to keep
