Beginners Stained Glass Evening Class - Traditional Leading
Learn to design and create leaded stained glass in 6 evening sessions!

"Excellent facilities and tuition, very knowledgeable tutors." - Kate

Our 6 session evening course is a beginner's introduction to the traditional method of stained glass construction using lead cames.
The course will give you technical skills and and uderstanding of key design principles to allow you to develop your own ideas and make pieces of stained glass under your own steam.
Like many of our students, you may even feel inspired to set up at home!

This course builds on the structure of our one-day beginner's class, adding a design skills session at the start, and time spent finishing and preparing your piece for display in the fnal session.

With a maximum of 5 students and two tutors you can be sure of plenty of attention and guidance throughout the class.

6 evenings - leaded stained glass beginners class for up to 5 people

The course structure allocates one evening to each of the key stages.
If your work progesses more quickly that's fine - the structure allows for flexibility!

Session 1 - designing your piece, maximum size 325mm approx on the longest side or a similar size to one of our garden panel 1-day projects. We'll ask you to send us a sketch of your design (or you can call in to the gallery!) If you prefer to use one of our beginner's designs that's fine!

Session 2 - cutting the coloured glass for your design. We'll give you some glass cutting exercises to complete once we've taught you the basics and then you'll cut the glass for your project.

Session 3 - grinding your pieces of glass to fit your design accurately. We'll show you how to work methodically, for the best fit, and the neatest end result.

Session 4 - leading your panel using similar materials to those used historically, shaping and cutting the leads to build your panel.

Sessions 5 & 6- soldering your project. We'll give you a lead soldering masterclass. You'll cement your panel this week too, although time will be available afterwards to do this if needed.
We'll also look at displaying your piece, soldering loops on and review your progress.

Throughout the course we'll add in some of the history of glass making and stained glass for your interest.
We have created this course structure to allow for flexibility because we all work at different rates.

Our aim is for you to enjoy the course, learn more about making stained glass than our 1-day class can include and take home a beautiful piece of traditional leaded stained glass of your own design!

The course cost includes:

  • All materials and guidance on your design in advance
  • Use of tools and protective gear
  • Refreshments during the evening
  • 2 tutors, maximum class size 5 people
  • Info pack to keep with information on getting started, where to buy glass and tools, plus reminders on techniques - emailed as PDF
