Porthleven - venue for the 5-day
stained glass courses - October

A great place to stay, relax and be inspired!

"Thanks for a great week. I had a great time and really like the flexibility the course allows so everyone can do their own thing ” - Cornwall course attendee

Porthleven, near Helston, Cornwall

Porthleven, until recently, was a bustling working harbour with a fishing community and busy boatyards. These days it's as much a holiday destination, although the harbour is still home to many working boats.

The harbour village is well served with restaurants and pubs, most of which are known to us! Porthleven offers a good range of holiday cottages, B&Bs and a guest house, also known to us.

Nearby, the South-West Coastal Path affords breathtaking views out to sea and over the rugged cliffs, while beaches, secluded bays and ruined tin mine workings provide a varied landscape.

Within 20 miles is St Ives, with the Tate Gallery, an array of independent galleries and working studios and the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden and Museum.

Across the sands of Loe Bar is the Penrose Estate, perfect for a lakeside walk. In the Penzance direction, St Michael's Mount provides a striking backdrop to the towns of Penzance, Newlyn (with several well-known art galleries) and Mousehole.

Workshop attendees can opt to take a half or whole day to explore, visit St Ives, or walk the dramatic coast path nearby. Having visited the area many times, and benefiting from good local connections, we can advise on places to visit and travel arrangements.

The venue for our class is a converted lifeboat house, right at the edge of Porthleven harbour. The space is light and airy, with the sea just yards away.
Also just yards away is the Ship Inn, one of our favourites; pop in for well kept local ales, good food and a real taste of Cornish life!

Porthleven has a stained glass gallery, two other fine-art galleries, and a variety of interesting shops and cafes to enjoy. Pasties are readily available, as are cream teas and proper Cornish ice cream.

Some recommended places to eat and drink:

The Ship Inn - an 18th century inn reputedly frequented by smugglers back then; frequented by locals and holidaymakers now, it serves good food with plenty of locally-caught fish and Mike's favourite beer, Sharps Doom Bar.
Feel free to offer him a pint!

Amelies - funky yet informal, with contemporary food and a fun atmosphere; space to sit outside and watch the boats in the harbour.

Kota - a smart upmarket restaurant serving great food with an Asian twist in a stylish space, and partner restaurant, KotaKai.

And there are plenty more places to enjoy!
