Create Amazing Portraits - 5-week Course with Lesley Passey
5-week course for beginners and all levels

This exciting new course is an inspiring way for all new artists and those with some experience to discover the secrets to creating amazing portraits!

This course in 5 half-day sessions will guide you through the basics - from observing and understanding the structures of the human head through to creating outlines in proportion and on to finishing fully detailed portraits - all in just 5 weeks!

  • No previous experience is necessary; also suitable for those already painting
  • Step by step demonstrations and critiques
  • Variety of mediums to explore
  • Exercises designed to help you understand the composition of the human face
  • Small class sizes
  • Sketching techniques with charcoal and pencils
  • Painting techniques with acrylics
  • Colour mixing and brush control
  • Visors and widely spaced sanitized workspaces
  • Most materials and refreshments are included
  • This 5-session course costs £155 inc VAT per person

The Course Structure covers:

  • Making a first portrait and reviewing its likeness with feedback from the tutor
  • Modelling an ear, nose, eye and mouth in clay to develop an understanding of the 3d shape of the face
  • Using the Grid method to create a realistic image from a photo
  • Building on previous work to make a portrait in charcoals with the Grid and clay features
  • Developing these principles and producing a further portrait in pastels
  • Learning to use the Zorn palette - producing a personal portrait with detail, shadows, highlights and your new insight

You are asked to bring:

  • A3 Mixed Media pad
  • Brushes suitable for acrylic work (eg White Taklon Brushes 11 pack (approx £7)

This class is led by Lesley Passey, an accomplished artist, graphic designer and course creator. After a career designing and developing courses in further education, Lesley is now sharing her skills and introducing new artists to the joys of producing lifelike portraits they'll be proud to show off!

About Lesley Passey

Lesley graduated from Bath Academy of Art in Graphic Design and Illustration. She has worked in Design consultancy in London and moved on to a Senior Designer Post at the Open University in Milton Keynes.

She later set up a degree course in graphic design at Milton Keynes College. She later graduated from the University of Northampton with a Masters Degree in print making.

Now fully retired from college life she sculpts busts in clay and works in 2D with oils, pastels and acrylics to produce portraits and landscapes. She often uses digital skills to enhance her finished artwork taking it in an innovative direction.
