Our 'Getting Started With Your New Kiln' course is for anyone planning to buy their own kiln, or who already has one and is anxious about using it. The course will equip you with the fundamental knowledge needed to use your kiln for your first fusing projects.
You will get the best value from this course if you've done some fusing already.

With a maximum of 4 students you can be sure of plenty of attention and guidance throughout the class, plus plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

2 days - Getting Started With Your New Kiln Course for up to 4 people

The course structure is divided into several sessions, each covering key subjects essential to the safe and enjoyable use of your kiln.

Day 1:

  • Introductions and Orientation
  • Fusing Basics – Different firing types - slump, tack, fire polish and full fuse
  • COE essentials and Bullseye vs System 96 vs Float Glass
  • Basics of firing schedules – breaking down in to segments
  • Importance of annealing and recommended initial schedules ((for Bullseye)
  • Kiln choice and location basics
  • Insurance for your home & kiln
  • Preparing your kiln, shelf and moulds – sanding, cleaning, priming & drying including hands-on sessions
  • Testing your new kiln – some simple projects to test your kiln, using a test kit (for Bullseye only)
  • Entering a firing schedule into our Skutt kiln and reviewing a schedule in our Kilncare kiln

Day Two:

  • Kiln Essentials – what maintenance is commonly needed.
  • Deeper dive in to firing schedules – how and why to modify your firings; understanding third party schedules.
  • Trouble Shooting –
    • Small bubbles or big bubbles
    • Cracks on way up or cracks on way down
    • Slumping failures - breaks and insufficient slumping
  • Q&A session – questions sent in advance, plus questions on the day
  • Optional - Glass Cutting session if required, and info on tools recommended for the home studio.

Our aim is for you to enjoy the course, learn much more about making fused glass art than our 1-day classes can cover and go home inspired and equipped to enjoy your glass fusing journey.

The course cost of £320 inc VAT per person includes:

  • All materials required
  • Full tuition throughout
  • Use of tools and protective gear
  • Refreshments during the session including herbal teas, decaffeinated drinks & gluten-free biscuits and lunch from the Bell Cafe
  • Maximum class size 4 people
  • Info pack to keep with information on glass and tools used, kiln schedules used, plus reminders on techniques - emailed as PDF
  • Post-course support via Zoom and email
  • Eligibility for our Project Day Programme with preferrential prices for project firings
  • Class runs from 10.30am on day one to 5pm on day two with breaks for lunch at our Northants studio
