Stained Glass Classes - Etching
"M & J were infectiously enthusiastic. Very enjoyable day. " - Stephen
Etching can really add interest to stained glass; letters, numbers, words, natural designs, abstract features - the combination of stained glass and etching is both fun and creative!
Our one-day introduction to the chemical method of glass etching will give glass artists a grounding in the essential techniques, plenty of hands-on experience and a great feel for the potential of etching to add to their designs!
With a maximum of 4 students and two tutors you can be sure of plenty of attention and guidance throughout the class.
And of course you take home the piece(s) you make!
One-day glass etching class for those with some stained glass experience
We start out by looking at the basic processes of etching on glass:
- How to design suitable patterns for etching
- Preparing the etch resist plastic and cutting out your design
- Using etching cream to etch the surface of the glass
The one-day class involves making a simple stained glass piece from one of our designs (or one of yours by arrangement in advance).
We invite you to bring some ideas of etching designs - although we have plenty of designs available if you prefer.
During the day you will:
- Create an etch design
- Cut and grind the coloured glass for your design
- Apply the etch resist and cut out your design with a scalpel
- Apply the etching cream and clean when etched
- Foil and solder your piece
- Finish your piece with a lead came surround if appropriate
The course cost of £125 includes:
- All materials, choice of simple designs and glass
- Use of tools and protective gear
- Refreshments during the day & lunch at the nearby ARTea Rooms
- 2 tutors, maximum class size 4 people
- Info pack to keep with information on tools and materials plus reminders on techniques
- Your piece to take home
