Beginners Stained Glass Class -
Mirror Making (using lead)
"An excellent course - I had lots of fun " - Kate
Suitable for: complete beginners; those who've done leaded or foiled stained glass (new skills!)
This introduction to the leading method of stained glass construction will give you a good grounding in the essential skills.
You'll get lots of hands-on experience with the tools we use, plus tips, tricks and a little history about this form of stained glass and you'll make a mirror to be proud of!
Our one day classes are suitable for anyone over 18, although we do advise that anyone with a medical condition that limits their hand strength or control contact us before booking to discuss.
With a maximum of 5 students you can be sure of plenty of attention and guidance throughout the class.
Making stained glass mirrors requires some specialist techniques, making this class suitable for those who've tried stained glass before, as well as for beginners.
One-day stained glass mirror beginners class for up to 5 people
After a short health & safety discussion, we'll start by showing you how to score and break glass.
Within about 20 minutes you'll be cutting glass yourself.
Once comfortable with scoring and breaking the glass, we'll introduce you to the basic techniques and tools you'll need for your mirror project.
You'll then choose the shape of your mirror (round or square) and begin cutting the coloured glass you'll make it with.
When we're all ready for a break, we'll have lunch from the nearby Cafe.
In the afternoon, you'll assemble the cut pieces of glass into your mirror using lead cames!
You'll finish your mirror by applying felt baize to the back of the mirror if time allows, and soldering wire to hang your mirror by.
You may also like to use a chemical patina on your mirror, for a more traditional look.
This class differs from our original beginners classes in several ways, making this class of interest to those who've already done some stained glass.
You'll learn about working with mirror glass, especially how to avoid damaging the silvered surfaces; you'll also learn how to construct a piece with glasses of different thicknesses and about finishing with a lead came edge.
